About us

Established in 1980

We are a family owned business run by father and son, Hugh and Joe Dorrington. We have over 40 years of experience growing broadleaved trees and shrubs for countryside planting schemes. We partner with individuals, organisations and communities to plant and maintain new woodlands and hedgerows across the British countryside.

The Nursery

What started as a hobby in a garden potting shed has now become a nationally recognised, independent tree nursery. We specialise in growing native trees and shrubs from seed. Where possible, seed is collected by ourselves from local sources. We are able to supply the complete range of species for new planting schemes including English Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO) and Countryside Stewardship (CS) hedge planting. Our price lists for the 2023/24 planting season will be available on this website in September.

Natural Woodlands

We have pioneered the art and science of growing new natural woodlands rather than simply plantations. A natural wood has a dense shrubby edge, an understorey and a canopy, as well as rides and glades. Natural selection will largely determine the future composition of the wood. A sustainable harvest of firewood and timber would still allow most of the biomass produced to return to the soil. Natural regeneration would allow woodland cover to be maintained indefinitely. Management of these woodlands provides a diversity of habitats which in turn maximises biodiversity. Read our blog pages for tips on how to plant and manage new natural woodlands.
